Strasbourg 2011
DAVID
PEACE WRITES:
In October 2011 the Probus Club of Tamworth travelled to Strasbourg to
visit the European Parliament.
The 4-day trip was arranged by Probian Brian Whitehouse and we were
guests of Mike Nattrass, the MEP (Member of the European Parliament)
for the West Midlands from 2004 to 2014.
As well as visiting the European Parliament, our group enjoyed free
time in the picturesque towns of Colmar and Strasbourg in the heart of
the Alsace wine growing region, near the Swiss and German borders.
Our thanks to Probian Brian Whitehouse for all his work in arranging a
most enjoyable trip.
On a sad note, some of our fellow Probians are no longer with us, so
perhaps these few pictures may serve as fond memories of good friends.

JCB 2012
DAVID
PEACE WRITES:
It was 8.45 a.m. on Wednesday August 15 2012 when our Probus group
boarded the coach in Corporation Street, Tamworth.
Our destination was the JCB factory at Rocester near Uttoxeter, were
we were welcomed by friendly tour guides.
We were about to embark on a 2 hour factory tour to discover the story
of JCB.
We learnt that JCB (Joseph Cyril Bamford), from a small garage in
1945, founded what is today a world-leading business.
Our tour guides took us through the JCB story, from that 1945 farm
trailer to the record-breaking JCB Dieselmax land vehicle (350.097 mph
at Bonneville Salt Flats) and lots more.
Thanks to the Probus Club of Tamworth for arranging a very interesting
day out.

Bletchley 2013
DAVID
PEACE WRITES:
On Tuesday 17th September 2013 the Probus Club of Tamworth visited
Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes.
We arrived at Bletchley in a heavy rainstorm, causing everyone to
shelter beneath a handy horse chestnut tree.
My attempt at a group photograph was less than successful. (I blame
the rain, that's my excuse!).
Things brightened up as we began our guided tour of Bletchley Park,
the wartime "Station X", home of the secret codebreakers.
During the Second World War, Station X occupied a huge site at
Bletchley, with thousands of people working in great secrecy.
But today only a few buildings survive.
On our tour we learnt many stories of the Bletchley codebreakers.
A highlight was the story of Tamworth's Colin Grazier and his part in
capturing vital codebooks from a German U-boat.
As many will know, Colin Grazier lost his life in this action, but the
captured codebooks are said to have shortened the course of the war.
All in all, the visit to Bletchley Park was a most interesting day out
for our Probus Club.
For anyone who has not yet been there, a visit to "Station X" is
highly recommended.

Moira Furnace Walk June 2021
Walking with The Probus Club of Tamworth
On 30th June 2021, our informal walking group met at Donisthorpe for a pleasant walk beside the Ashby canal.
The weather was fine and sunny as we followed the towpath alongside the 1¼ mile isolated stretch of the canal.
An easy route for our little group, to reach our destination, the Moira Furnace (dating from 1806), now a museum, set in the greenery of the country park.
The museum staff made us welcome, with useful information for a possible future visit.
The museum's canal boat Joseph Wilkes is available for short cruises along the waterway, something for a future visit.
After morning coffee in the nearby friendly café, our little group retraced our steps back along the towpath to Donisthorpe.
In Donisthorpe village, we rounded off the day nicely with a pub lunch at the Halfway House.
With warm thanks to our good friend, Probian Paul Dean, for his sterling work in organising the walk.
